This past weekend, I took an anatomy class for my yoga teacher re-certification and was rocked with body awareness and haven't been able to sit still since (sitting is not a good idea anyway). In addition to causing chronic pain and dis-ease, keeping your body weak, sedentary and mis-aligned (incorrect posture) your body speaks volumes about who you are and how you move through this world. Great posture exudes and promotes confidence, a flexible body keeps your mind open to possibility, strength helps you feel able to take on the world, whereas poor posture, weak muscle tone and stiffness contribute to taking on those same mental attitudes.
For example, spinal kyphosis (hunched back) puts excess pressure on your lungs making deep breathing difficult which in turn leaves you with less oxygen which is a contributing factor to depression. In addition to back and neck pain, the collapsing of the ribs on to practically all of your vital organs can inhibit digestion, cardiovascular activity and can contribute to neurological complications.
As you can see, just a few vertebrae being out of line can have a huge range of implications. Keeping your body in top form will help you get through life easier, make a positive impact on your relationships, work or business. For self-care 101, or the stuff you never learned in school, get to know your body and fine-tune it, your life will thank you.
